GETTING STARTED WITH 8-BIT
To begin, the 8-bit mode is a fantastic option if your production requires quick shoots and turn-arounds. This would mean the Z 9 is a camera that’s able to produce final footages that require as minimal colour-grading as possible.
In the 8-bit mode, you will be able to produce footage with standard – SDR tones that comply with Rec 709, a feature that you’ll have full control over via the camera’s in-built Creative Picture Control. The Creative Picture Control allows for a creators’ imagination to run wild, with pre-sets from the camera itself, reducing the need for filters through software or third-party apps.

LEVELLING UP WITH 10-BIT & N-LOG
Filming in 10-bit mode is especially useful for creators that intend to colour grade during post-production, particularly with the N-Log mode – a unique tone-mode that’s engineered to capture and retain as much detail as possible, leaving you with the ultimate flexibility when making tweaks and colour-grading in post. At Nikon, we provide 3D LUT files for N-Log that can be applied in supported non-linear editors (NLE) to help quicken the overall process.
Occasionally, you may find the need to film or record in HDR-compliance H.265 video with HLG tone mode – however the HDR tone mode will require a compatible HDR monitor to display a broader spectrum of colours and contrasts more accurately. Aside from H.265 file formats, the Z 9 is also built to support filming in multiple file formats including codec, bit depth, and tone modes; as well as the ProRes HQ mode – an extremely popular industry format. So, rest assured that your Nikon Z 9 would be able to take you across a range of industry standards, whether you’re looking for quick turnarounds or in-depth cinematic quality.
Do note that a compatible video editing software such as the DaVinci Resolve is required to make full use of the N-Log footage.

MASTERING THE 12-BIT
For even greater flexibility and choice, the 12-bit output provides with massive RAW data from the camera sensor, an ideal solution for high contrast scenes that may require comprehensive colour-correction and colour-grading during the post-production stage.
However, it would do well to note that while filming in RAW video mode, you will essentially be capturing and storing every last detail that your Nikon Z 9 sees – resulting in extremely large file sizes. In such scenarios, the Z 9 can choose to store your footages in ProRes RAW, up to 4.1K 60P formats, or opt for the Nikon exclusive N-RAW formats at up to 8.3K 60P.
To take things a step further in post-production, the Z 9 is ready to work with HDR project, leaving creators with the ability to recreate image realism. What this means is that your Z 9 will capture what your eyes see in colours and contrasts even between the brightest whites and darkest blacks.
Do note, that creators will require an HDR-capable screen such as one from the Asus ProArt series to be able to see, edit and deliver in HDR standard.
TOWARDS THE FUTURE
As technology advances quicker than we can imagine, we are now able to recreate extreme image realism from the naked eye to the camera with modern HDR screens. The technology will also enliven colours and contrast between the brightest whites and the darkest of blacks, leaving creators with greater range over their palette, allowing for more impressive visual imagery.
Additionally, you’ll now be able to go further, film longer and manage all your files with impressive organisation, logic-based commands from your on-screen navigation, without fear of your camera overheating.
